Grief - Denial - 11"x14" Embellished Framed Ink and Acrylic on Watercolor Paper

Item Description

There once was a little girl made of cloth. She woke up one day, remembering nothing but her name, Misery Black. Misery sees the world through wide, innocent eyes.

At the beginning of the pandemic and during lockdown, I, like many others, didn't think it was going to last. It's just like the flu, right? When I started "Denial", it was a stand alone piece reflecting my feelings that we needed to stick together and remain hopeful. I had already been thinking about doing a series on the stages of grief, but at the time, this piece wasn't about that. As the pandemic went on, I was less enthusiastic about finishing it. That's when I realized this WAS a representation of grief. I was in denial. I was denying the fact that I WASN'T ok. I was just at the beginning of my journey of grief and the ensuing depression. And, of course, much of the world was in denial. At this time, our collective grieving had just begun. I added the mixed media to the frame in order to evoke looking through a window at a serene scene of hope and community. The white curtain and sweet accents frame the innocence and naivety about what was to come. The curtain on the outside of the window is a sign that not all was as it appeared to be.

Original ink and acrylic on watercolor paper. Handmade frame is 11"x14" painted wood with fabric and buttons, wired and ready for hanging.
