Grief - Anger - 11"x14" Framed Ink and Acrylic on Watercolor Paper

Item Description

Introducing my newest baby, Shade Noir. Shade is a puppet who has no control over her life, her choices. She has big unblinking eyes that see all, yet no mouth so that she can have no say. It's no secret that Misery Black is a reflection of me. But, like most of us, there are many sides to my personality. Misery is, contrary to what her name suggests, a reflection of my optimism. She is my hope, love, confidence. Shade is the opposite - she is the "shade" or shadow self of Misery - of me. She represents my fear, sadness, powerlessness. Shade may not have a mouth, but she is certainly my voice.

At the beginning of the pandemic and during lockdown, I was part of an online show that was trying to help creatives get through losing income. I was paired with a poet whose work inspired this piece. It seemed like a perfect fit with my "Grief" series, depicting the stages of grief. "A stick in the side of any business intent on ignoring public health". I have long belived that corporations profit off the backs of everyday people who had to choose between going to work during a pandemic or feeding their family. It disgusts me that corporate greed is allowed to treat people like an expendable resource while they see profits skyrocketing. "Anger" depicts how we all are small and subject to the whims of the Almighty Dollar. As I grieve over the loss of compassion and empathy in the world, I go through the stage of Anger in how many care more about profit than they do people.
