Spring is in the Air

Spring has sprung! It's the time of year when many people start to emerge from their winter cocoons. March does seem to be special this year. In addition to St Patrick's Day, Easter is March 31! It's going to be a very busy March for us Irish Catholics! Lol! That may overshadow the fact that this is also One Love, 2016Women's History month. What?! You mean ANOTHER way of overlooking women?! Perish the thought! *eyeroll*
As I have mentioned before, I have spent part of the last couple of years doing a lot of soul searching. Being a woman and what that means is a major part of who I am - all of my art is rooted in that identity. As I have gotten older, my idea of what it means to be a woman has changed, morphed, evolved. The current political and cultural environment - in the US, but also globally - has definitely affected my views. As I see our rights and autonomy still being challenged and taken away in the 21st century, I feel more strongly than ever to give a voice to those that have none. As a white cis hetero woman, I am in a better position than so many others. Now, the woman part is under attack. But, then again, hasn't it always been?
There are many injustices in this world and sometimes it all seems insurmountable. But that's why recognizing Women's History Month is so important. It's about reflecting on past acheivements and facing present hurdles. It's why recognizing Black History Month and Pride month is so important. How can we make great change unless we recognize the struggles, successes and HUMANITY of different identities? Maybe someday, people will see that we really are all the same, yet also different, and that fact is wonderful and normal and accepted. Maybe then, people won't need a month dedicated to celebrating different groups. It will be celebrated every day, just as it should be.
Until then, happy Women's History Month! The theme of 2024 is celebrating "Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion". Honestly, that really is something to be celebrated - especially right now. Even if you aren't a woman, you probably know one. Lol! Give the women in your life a little extra love. Whatever your identity, advocating for equity, diversity and inclusion is a good way to live your life. To those who have that mission, I salute you.

"If they don't give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair." - Shirley Chisholm (1924-2005) US Congresswoman
